Pictures of the apartment where I wrote Everybody Cooks Rice, in Central Square, Cambridge.

It is May 2006 and we have just moved! It is sad to say goodbye to the house and neighbors who were so good to us. In 1978, I moved here to be near my best friend from high school, who lived on the 3rd floor. Some years later, when our landlord was putting our apartments up for sale, my sister, my husband and my best friend and her husband bought this house. We painted the outside, insulated it, installed storm windows, built a new porch and put in new bathrooms in the first year. It was, not to mince words, a dump when we started and a somewhat nicer dump after all that work. Many years and projects later it is a good deal prettier. Although we need to leave we'll miss the place and the people very much. We send best wishes to the younger, energetic new owner.

Here are some recent pictures of our old apartment...

Artsy shot of front door- original glass in some

Offices in closets. Robert's office is on extreme left and my office was in the 30 inch wide set of shelves above the exercise ball in center. This is the work space where I wrote Everybody Cooks Rice in March of 1988.

Back yard at the end of winter. Darlington house is next door. Our "yard" was a brokenglassgarbagefilled weed patch when we moved in. It took years to get it usable.

Inner entry door- we were impressed with "phone boxes" in the UK

Long entry hallway, coat closet on right. Our daughters and niece loved to play in the closet spaces.

Recently redone kitchen. Not how it looked in 1978...

The spiral staircase was fun and practical. Except for moving things.

Another basement room

One of the three rooms in the basement. This was meant to be "studio"
